The historic center
On foot, by bike or Segway, the historical center of Pisa enclosed by its nearly-intact walls is worthy of a thorough visit. We can stop on the Piazza dei Cavalieri (the Square of the Knights) surrounded by buildings built for the Order of the Knights of St. Stevens in the 16th century, walk along the banks of the Arno admiring the facades of the Renaissance palaces and the Chiesa della Spina (the Church of the Holy Thorn), a Gothic pearl; visit unique museums in the Italian panorama, such as the museum of San Matteo, which exhibits precious medieval painted crosses and Arabian ceramic basins, or the brand new museum of ancient ships, created after a major archaeological discovery 30 years ago. Keith Haring, a renowned mural artist, even left Pisa a mural before he died.
Turn off of the beaten paths and combine a tour of the historic center with that of the Piazza dei Miracoli, so you can enthusiastically claim that Pisa is not only the city of the leaning tower, but the city of a thousand discoveries.
